Before I Die wall, documentary film to explore meaning of life

Before I Die wall

UT Health’s Briscoe Library is hosting two related events that explore the meaning of life in the context of guaranteed mortality.

From May 8 to 16, the public is invited to drop by the library to contribute to a Before I Die wall by completing the statement: Before I die, I want to ___________. The wall will be on display in the library.

The original wall was created on an abandoned house in New Orleans by artist Candy Chang after the death of someone she loved. Since then, more than 2,000 Before I Die walls have been created in over 70 countries around the world.

In conjunction with the wall, the FRONTLINE documentary, Being Mortal, will be screened at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 16, in Pestana Lecture Hall. The film follows renowned New Yorker writer and Boston surgeon Atul Gawande as he explores the relationships doctors have with patients who are nearing the end of life. In many cases, both doctors and patients are unprepared to deal with death.

Both of the events are sponsored by a collaboration among Vitas Hospice, University Health System, GRECC, Audie L. Murphy VA, and UT Health San Antonio.

The wall signing and the film are both free and open to the public.

Ethics CME credits are available.
