Faculty to speak at TPR’s Think Science series

Sara E. Espinoza, M.D.

Sara E. Espinoza, M.D., M.Sc., associate professor of medicine, and Dean L. Kellogg, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the departments of medicine and physiology, will be the featured panelists at Texas Public Radio’s Think Science series at noon, Aug. 16, at the Pearl Garage.

Think Science is a quarterly presentation. The Aug. 16 show is on issues of longevity and aging. Both Drs. Espinoza and Kellogg are members of UT Health San Antonio’s Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies.

Dr. Espinoza provides clinical care at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie Murphy Division, where she serves as associate director for clinical programs with the VA’s San Antonio Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). In this role, she collaborates with other providers and interdisciplinary team members to design and implement new models of care to improve care for the aging veteran. Dr. Espinoza and her team are conducting a National Institutes of Health-funded study to test an oral drug, metformin, as a novel intervention for the prevention of frailty.

Dean L. Kellogg, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Kellogg is principal investigator of several translational projects to explore anti-aging effects of rapamycin, acarbose and other potential anti-aging compounds in humans. These projects involve studying the effects of anti-aging agents on mechanisms of physical performance, cognitive function and cardiovascular function. He also serves as co-leader of the Clinical Research Core for the San Antonio Claude D. Pepper Older American Independence Center.

Think Science is a free event, but you must register here.
