Have you missed your cancer screenings?

Mays Cancer Center experts to discuss during May 29 webinar why getting them now is important

SAN ANTONIO (May 28, 2020) — Studies have shown that individuals with cancer who get COVID-19 are more than twice as likely to have poor outcomes. And with everyone staying home during the pandemic, many people have missed their regular cancer screenings.

Because it is much easier to treat cancer when it is in its earliest stages, the Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson, is holding a free, live webinar from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 29, on the topic of “Cancer Screening and Prevention During the COVID-Era.”

The public is invited to listen to a live presentation from Mays Cancer Center experts on various prevention and screening topics such as mammograms, cervical and colorectal screenings, and diet and exercise. The panelists also will answer questions and explain why it’s crucial to continue with appointments for screenings, tests and treatments to avoid more advanced cancer in the future.

The experts include:

  • Ruben Mesa, M.D., director of the Mays Cancer Center
  • Kate Lathrop, M.D., assistant professor of breast oncology
  • Georgia McCann, M.D., associate professor of gynecologic oncology
  • Randy Wright, M.D., medical director of gastrointestinal oncology
  • Gail Tomlinson, M.D., co-director of the population science and prevention program

“We have developed various ways to keep patients safe when they come to the Mays Cancer Center for appointments, screenings, treatments and tests. In fact, we safely continued cancer treatments here throughout the pandemic. We know cancer patients have been afraid to go out in public because their immune system may be compromised, but it’s important to know that it is safe to come here,” Dr. Mesa said.

Register and submit your questions for the webinar today.

If you are unable to attend the live webinar, you can still register to receive a recording of the completed webinar to listen to at your convenience.
