UT Health San Antonio orthopaedics professor and trauma surgeon receives national recognition

Boris Zelle, MD

Boris Zelle, MD, professor in the Department of Orthopaedics in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), has been named the first recipient of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Health Disparities Research Award from the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). The award ceremony will be held at the annual OTA meeting in Tampa, Fla., Oct. 12-15, 2022.

“Our team has published several research papers over the last 10 years on health care disparities with a special focus on Hispanic trauma patients,” Dr. Zelle said. “This award recognizes these cumulative research contributions to this field and their high impact within the community. The OTA is the leading society in the field of orthopaedic trauma globally. This award is also a testimony to the high national and international visibility of our research efforts at UT Health San Antonio.”

When off duty, Zelle loves spending time with his wife, Ana, and their two children, Julia and Matteo. The Zelle’s especially enjoy their family time and backyard barbecues at home. Zelle also likes to stay active and, as time allows, takes the opportunity to cycle on his road bike through the Hill Country early on Saturday or Sunday mornings.
