20th annual clay shooting competition raises money for local cancer research, treatment

SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 3, 2013) — As sporting clays fly through the air and shooters strive to hit them, the 20th annual Vulcan Materials Funshoot this Saturday, Sept. 7, will once again raise money for the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.

In the past 19 years, this team of volunteers has raised more than $1.83 million to support the CTRC’s mission of conquering cancer through research, prevention and treatment. The CTRC is the premiere cancer treatment and research center in Central and South Texas.

Approximately 350 people are expected Saturday morning at the 20th annual Vulcan Materials Funshoot at the National Shooting Complex on San Antonio’s western edge.

Jeff Lott, vice president for Vulcan Materials, said Vulcan employees are excited to be hosting the 20th annual competition.

“When this funshoot was first held in 1994, we never thought that 20 years later our team of volunteer organizers would have raised more than $1.8 million for the CTRC and its mission,” he said.

Lott said Vulcan Materials team members are touched each year by new stories of how the CTRC has helped members of the community. “The doctors and staff at CTRC save lives every day. We feel very fortunate to be able to support them in their incredible efforts,” he said.

Ian M. Thompson, Jr., M.D., director of the CTRC, will be one of the many competitors at the shooting event this Saturday.

“Every year I look forward to this event, and every year my shooting gets a little better,” Dr. Thompson said. “I am always amazed and touched by the enthusiasm and commitment of the Vulcan employees to helping the CTRC in our mission. It means a lot to us and to our patients.”

The fund-raising event begins with breakfast and the shooting competition in the morning. The funshoot also features lunch, a prize drawing, and silent and live auctions. The National Shooting Complex is located at 5931 Roft Road, off Culebra Road and outside Loop 1604.
