JOB: Registered dental assistant, Group 1, student dental clinic, School of Dentistry

YEARS AT THE HSC: 40

“What I enjoy about working with students is that we all continue to learn. They’re very pleasant to work with. Of course they work with the faculty here and they’re taught these procedures, and we help them learn. A lot of times they look to us to help get through it. And we understand it’s a tough time for them, being a student. So each day we make as pleasant as we can. And I just love the patients.”

“So many patients that I’ve seen through the years, they’ll come back and ask the students, ‘Is Cindy still around?’ And now the patients are the children and grandchildren of some we saw years ago. And the same with the students. I remember some of their parents when they were students.”

“All of the assistants and everyone I work with, we’re like one big family. We help each other out. It’s just a beautiful thing. (There are challenging times and events), but everyone is so close, you get through it together.”

“My greatest reward is when the students, and even some of the past graduates, they’ll come by and say, ‘Cindy, thank you for being there for me.’ That right there makes it worthwhile. That tells me I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. And I still hear from past graduates. Beautiful cards. Pictures of all the kids. And they say, ‘Cindy, we love you and we miss you.’ “

BOTTOM LINE: “I’ve had 40 years at the Health Science Center and I wish it could be 40 more!”
