AAMC leader visits Long School of Medicine

Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), visited UT Health San Antonio June 8.

During a question-and-answer session, Dr. Kirch, Robert A. Hromas, M.D., FACP, dean of the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, and leaders of the Long School of Medicine held a wide-ranging discussion that touched on funding of residency slots, medical school applicant scoring, diversification of students in academic medical centers, and balancing the academic missions of teaching and research with patient care. Additional topics included the National Institutes of Health budget, the role of academic medical centers in science and innovation, faculty recruitment and retention, and physician burnout and well-being.

Dr. Kirch conducted a leadership retreat for the institution’s faculty and staff on June 9.
