More than 1,300 people attending The University of Texas Health Science Center’s second annual gala Saturday received great news for women in South Texas: the evening’s special honoree, former Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr., announced he is giving $5 million in support of cardiology and women’s health.

The Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio announced today that Jennifer Carew, Ph.D., and Francis Giles, M.D., have been awarded a $150,000 grant from LeukemiaTexas for research to develop novel therapies for the treatment of leukemia.

Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, was honored Sept. 10 by the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon with an honorary doctoral degree for his distinguished contributions to medicine, especially in the area of organ transplantation.

A team in the UT Health Science Center San Antonio Department of Psychiatry is assessing the effectiveness of three treatment settings of Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) TherapyTM in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) as part of a multi-site research study.
