And the Oscar [or in this case residency] goes to …

The 2019 Academy Awards may be over, but the medical school version happens this month. Cover the action as UT Health San Antonio’s senior medical students learn where they will spend the next three to seven years in residency training. None of them knows until the envelope is opened!

WHAT:          “Match Day 2019,” when 200 students of the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio will find out which U.S. residency program has accepted them for the next phase of their training.

WHEN:         The opening of envelopes begins at 11 a.m. Friday, March 15.

WHERE:        John T. Floore Country Store, 14492 Old Bandera Road, Helotes (78023)

NOTES:         Last fall and winter, Long School of Medicine students traveled throughout Texas and the country to interview with residency programs of their choice. The length of residency depends on the branch of medicine.

Last March, 99 percent of seniors in the Long School of Medicine matched to their residency of choice. By comparison, 84 percent of students nationwide matched to the top four programs on their rank list.

Last year, more than 43,000 applicants registered for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

According to the NRMP, results of the match are closely watched because they can predict future changes in the physician workforce.
