Health Science Center spin-offs reap Emerging Tech Fund grants

Two companies that spun out from the Health Science Center will receive grants from the $200 million Texas Emerging Technology Fund, Gov. Rick Perry announced May 31 in Austin. CardioSpectra Inc., which represents a collaboration of the Health Science Center and UT Austin, and Xilas Medical Inc. were among four companies awarded grants from the Fund in this round.




San Antonio study examines investigational drug for Alzheimer’s

San Antonio residents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease may be eligible to participate in a clinical study offered by the Health Science Center. The study will assess whether an investigational drug, Flurizan, can slow Alzheimer’s progression.


Study to explore gene sequences that may raise risk of depression

Area residents ages 18 to 80 who have suffered depression in the last two years, but are not currently depressed or taking an antidepressant, are encouraged to ask about a new study at the Behavioral Wellness (BeWell) Center, a clinical trials center of the department of psychiatry at the Health Science Center.
