Study to ask whether medical assistants are the right fit to keep us fit

A two-year, $296,000 grant awarded this summer by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) will enable physicians at the Health Science Center and University Health System to study a way to change four of our worst habits – smoking, lack of exercise, unhealthy eating and alcohol consumption.


Renowned cancer researcher/author joins the Health Science Center

Noted cancer expert Thomas J. Slaga, Ph.D., joined the Health Science Center this summer as a professor of pharmacology and San Antonio Cancer Institute (SACI) member. Dr. Slaga has been involved with scientific studies of cancer for almost 40 years and has research interests ranging from cancer causation, prevention and control to aging.



HSC records $6 million increase in NIH awards

The Health Science Center received more than $88 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards in fiscal year 2004, an increase of 7.5 percent over the previous year and 84 percent higher than FY 1999.
