The UT Police Department (UTPD) has been made aware of individuals impersonating Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents and contacting university faculty members as part of a widespread scheme in which scammers attempt to extort money or steal personal identifiable information.
In their most recent attempts, scammers indicated that DEA licenses have been compromised.
UTPD would like to remind the campus community that law enforcement will not ask individuals to:
- Provide credit card information over the phone.
- Provide payment with gift cards.
- Provide payment through any app.
- Withdraw cash and go somewhere to pay.
Additionally, DEA personnel will not contact medical practitioners to demand money or other forms of payment or request personal or sensitive information. The DEA will only notify people of a legitimate investigation by official letter.
Anyone receiving such a call should contact UTPD or your local law enforcement agency. You can also report the incident to the FBI at www.ic3.gov. The Federal Trade Commission provides resources and takes reports at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
