Careers await for 1,100 graduates who will keep San Antonio, and beyond, healthy

 

More than 1,100 students, including a female majority, are projected to receive degrees and certificates from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio during commencement ceremonies this spring and summer.

“We are extremely proud of this year’s candidates, who have distinguished themselves by their academic accomplishments, by competing successfully for residency programs and by scoring at the top of the nation on professional licensure examinations,” said William L. Henrich, MD, MACP, president of UT Health Science Center San Antonio.


School of Dentistry profile: Upcoming graduate embraces life’s redirection


More than 200 students have applied to graduate with the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, while at least 114 have applied to receive the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the School of Dentistry. Another 80 advanced certificates and master’s degrees are anticipated to be awarded by the School of Dentistry.


School of Nursing profile: ‘Everything I do, I’ve done for my son’


The largest student headcounts for commencement are in the School of Health Professions, which anticipates awarding more than 350 degrees and certificates including nearly 100 doctorates, and the School of Nursing, which expects to confer at least 260 baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is projected to confer at least 100 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), master’s and professional degrees.

Women outnumber men 688 to 421 (a 62% majority) in preliminary estimates for the May and summer commencements.

Among students who self-identified by ethnicity, the largest group of anticipated graduates is Hispanics at 418.

The health science center was established as a medical school by state legislation enacted in 1959. The six schools opened to students between 1966 and 1976. The University of Texas School of Public Health San Antonio, the newest addition, begins accepting students in 2024.

The health science center’s cumulative number of degrees awarded after summer conferral is expected to reach 46,400. Because some students receive more than one degree, the anticipated total of graduates after summer conferral is projected to be at least 42,300.

The six schools will celebrate the spring all-school commencement at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Alamodome.
