William Henrich, M.D., M.A.C.P., dean of the Health Science Center’s School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs, and Karen Fields, M.D., president and CEO at the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC), are pleased to announce that the Health Science Center and the CTRC have jointly recruited one of the nation’s outstanding oncologists, Tyler Curiel, M.D., to lead the San Antonio Cancer Institute (SACI).

Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, told Lower Rio Grande Valley leaders July 17 that the Regional Academic Health Center’s second Harlingen building, currently under construction, represents “a firm and enduring commitment by the Health Science Center to the people of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, chief among them our veterans.”

It has been more than a decade since the first laparoscopic colorectal surgery was performed, and all indications are that the minimally invasive technique “is a significant advance in the way we treat colorectal cancer and other conditions,” said John H.
