Researchers: Lack of play spaces ups obesity risk for Latino kids

Latinos have limited spaces to be physically active, which contributes to obesity rates in Latino kids, but sharing recreational facilities and creating walkable neighborhoods are promising solutions, according to a new package of research from Salud America!, a national network for Latino childhood obesity prevention based at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.

New chair of Department of Medicine named

W. Brian Reeves, M.D., currently professor and vice chair of medicine and chief of the Division of Nephrology at the Penn State College of Medicine, has been selected as chair of the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine, Dean Francisco González-Scarano, M.D., announced.

Two named to UT System’s Shine Academy

Alan Y. Sakaguchi, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology, and Sara L. Gill, Ph.D., professor of family and community health systems in the School of Nursing, have been selected as members of the University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine Academy of Health Science Education.
