A report released July 20 by the Institute of Medicine on the toll and frequency of prescription drug errors urges everyone, from patients and educators to industry and regulators, to play a role in enhancing procedures and vigilance so that errors and subsequent costs to health and the economy can be reduced.

William Henrich, M.D., M.A.C.P., dean of the Health Science Center’s School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs, and Karen Fields, M.D., president and CEO at the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC), are pleased to announce that the Health Science Center and the CTRC have jointly recruited one of the nation’s outstanding oncologists, Tyler Curiel, M.D., to lead the San Antonio Cancer Institute (SACI).

Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, told Lower Rio Grande Valley leaders July 17 that the Regional Academic Health Center’s second Harlingen building, currently under construction, represents “a firm and enduring commitment by the Health Science Center to the people of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, chief among them our veterans.”

House Bill 153, recently passed by the state Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry, is a milestone piece of legislation in the life of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and it will fund a signature research facility that will transform the face of the South Texas Medical Center, Health Science Center President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., said July 11 at a campus visit by Gov. Perry.
