Conversations About Ethics lecture to feature Buddhist teacher, anthropologist

Roshi Joan Halifax, Ph.D., a Buddhist teacher, anthropologist and pioneer in the field of end-of-life care, will speak at UT Health San Antonio July 23 as part of the “Conversations About Ethics” series.

Dr. Halifax is founder, abbot and head teacher at the Upaya Institute and Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She will speak on “Standing at the Edge: Finding Freedom Where Fear and Courage Meet” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, in Pestana Lecture Hall. The event is free and open to all. A catered reception will begin at 5 p.m. Continuing Medical Education credit is available.

Traits such as altruism, empathy and engagement epitomize strength of character but can also lead to personal suffering. Dr. Halifax will describe how compassion can enhance resilience in clinicians and caregivers. At a time when more than half of U.S. physicians show signs of burnout, compassion is an important feature of well-being.

The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics at UT Health San Antonio.
