Dental, nursing buildings Phase II renovations underway

Facilities Management is pleased to report that Phase II of the renovations to the dental and nursing buildings on the Long campus of UT Health San Antonio are underway.

These renovations will impact access and travel in this area of the Long campus.

Dental building, R Section renovation highlights include:

  • 2nd floor renovations are progressing. This floor will be occupied by occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy. The admissions office for the School of Health Professions dean is also being created on this floor.

Beginning Monday, March 12:

  • The 2nd floor lobby of the dental building will be closed. This closure is necessary to renovate the entrance and for fire and life safety upgrades to the adjacent stairwell. Detour signage will be provided to route pedestrian traffic to an adjacent building entrance.
  • 3rd floor: Approximately half of R Section is now under construction to create office suites for student counseling, School of Health Professions office of the dean, and ear, nose and throat (ENT) departmental offices.
  • 4th floor: Approximately 60 percent of this floor is now under construction to create Department of Pediatrics office suites.
  • All levels: Restroom accessibility and fire and life safety upgrades.

Beginning Monday, March 26: Closure of parking Lot 7 to all vehicular traffic. Pedestrian traffic into the dental building will continue to be available. This closure is necessary for improvements to handicap accessibility and life/safety systems, including access for fire department equipment. The closure is necessary to reconfigure the parking lot to upgrade accessible parking spaces, replacement of sidewalks and reinforcement of parking surfaces to handle the extreme loads of fire apparatus.

Nursing building highlights include:

  • 1st floor: Renovations are progressing smoothly. Activities include significant upgrades to classrooms and the Nancy Smith Hurd Auditorium.
  • 2nd floor: Renovations for the Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship (ONRS).
  • All levels: Restroom accessibility and fire and life safety upgrades.

Overall project completion remains scheduled for December 2019.
