Dermatology faculty member Jeffrey Meffert dies

Jeffrey J. Meffert, M.D., clinical associate professor and residency program director in the Division of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, died Dec. 5. He was 60.

Dr. Meffert was born on Okinawa to a military family. He graduated from John Marshall High School in San Antonio, earned a bachelor’s degree at Rice University and his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he graduated in 1981.

After completing his residency, he went on active duty in the U.S. Air Force from 1984 to 1992. He practiced family medicine and flight medicine before completing an Air Force residency in dermatology. He retired as a colonel in 2006.

After a few years in private practice, Dr. Meffert joined the faculty at the Health Science Center.

Dr. Meffert served as president of the Association of Military Dermatologists, president of the San Antonio Dermatological Society and in several capacities for the Bexar County Medical Society.

Funeral services with military honors were held Dec. 12 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
