Lois Bready, M.D., vice dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official (DIO), will retire at the end of June after 37 years of service, according to an announcement by Ronald Rodriguez, M.D., Ph.D., interim dean of the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.
A reception to honor Dr. Bready will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m., July 6, in the AAB foyer.
A native of Orange in southeast Texas, Dr. Bready did her undergrad work at The University of Texas at Austin before enrolling in the School of Medicine here at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.
After earning her medical degree in 1977, Dr. Bready headed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for an internship and then residency in anesthesiology. She began her teaching career here at the Health Science Center as assistant professor of anesthesiology in 1980, earning tenure in 1985-86 before advancing to associate professor in 1986 and full professor in 1992.
In 1999, Dr. Bready became director of Graduate Medical Education with responsibility for the institutional organization, oversight and accreditation of the residency and fellowship programs. She subsequently was named vice dean and Designated Institutional Official for the Health Science Center.
In 2008, Dr. Bready received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Medicine.
Dr. Rodriguez also announced that Robert Nolan, M.D., will serve as interim DIO pending the outcome of a national search.
