Luci K. Leykum, M.D., M.B.A., MSc, division chief of General and Hospital Medicine, has been selected as the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Distinguished Professor of Hospital Medicine. The honor is granted to a physician with an advanced level of expertise and focus and who has made significant contributions in this area.
Dr. Leykum will deliver the keynote lecture at the 2017 SGIM Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., in April. She will also conduct a poster walk-through and serve as a discussion member in an oral abstract session.
“It is an honor to be named the Distinguished Professor in Hospital Medicine, particularly at the inception of the program,” said Dr. Leykum. “I have been asked to speak about building resilience in academic careers, which will be a wonderful way to highlight the work our faculty are doing here in San Antonio, and to acknowledge our strong collaborations with our health system partners at UHS and the VA.”
Dr. Leykum, professor of medicine, was named chief of the newly created Division of General and Hospital Medicine in February 2016. She had served as division chief of hospital medicine since 2008. She works with the 60 faculty from the combined divisions to support and build on their educational, clinical and research endeavors.
Dr. Leykum came to San Antonio after completing medical school and residency at the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia University in New York City, where she also served on the faculty. She also holds an M.B.A. from Columbia.
