Rajam Ramamurthy, M.D., emeritus professor in the Department of Pediatrics, has been named the 2017 San Antonio Peace Laureate. She was initiated as the laureate at the 11th Annual  Blessing of the Peacemakers event Feb. 5, at the Whitley Center.

Dr. Ramamurthy, a native of India and pioneering neonatologist, was one of the founding members of the Interreligious Council of San Antonio, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The idea for a San Antonio Peace Laureate arose at “Soul of a Citizen,” a citywide conversation about the intersection of faith and politics held at the San Fernando AT&T Community Centre in 2007. The peace CENTER took on the project to honor a voice of wisdom and experience to speak for peace and justice in San Antonio.

Past laureates have included the Rev. Dr. Claude Black, Imam Omar Shakir, Rabbi Samuel and Lynn Stahl, Rosie Castro and Father Ron Rolheiser.
