Dr. Rodriguez named interim dean of School of Medicine

UT Health San Antonio President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, has appointed Ronald Rodriguez, M.D., Ph.D., as interim dean of the School of Medicine, effective Jan. 1.

The interim appointment comes after Francisco González-Scarano, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine and Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, announced in October his decision to step down, effective at the end of the year.

Dr. Henrich praised Dr. Rodriguez as a highly skilled urologic surgeon and oncologist, as well as an expert at prostate cancer detection and treatment.

“I am delighted that Dr. Rodriguez has agreed to assume this important interim post at such an exciting time in our School of Medicine’s history,” Dr. Henrich said. “I have full confidence that he will help us navigate successfully a continuing path to excellence.”

A San Antonio native, Dr. Rodriguez received his B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1984, his Ph.D. in cell biology from Baylor College of Medicine in 1990, and his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in 1992. He then entered the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine his residency and fellowship training.Dr. Rodriguez was a member of the faculty at Johns Hopkins from 1999-2012.

He joined the Health Science Center in  2013 as the Henry B. and Edna Smith Dielmann Memorial Professor of Urologic Science, and the chairman of the Department of Urology. He performs surgery at the UT Medicine Ambulatory Surgery Center, University Hospital, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Northwest Hospital, and the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital and sees patients in clinic at the UT Medicine Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC).
