Drs. Huang, Otto tapped to lead cancer center

William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president of UT Health San Antonio, has appointed two new leaders for the UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Tim Huang, Ph.D.

Tim Huang, Ph.D., was named interim director, and Randal A. Otto, M.D., was appointed as director for clinical affairs and physician-in-chief, Dr. Henrich said in a Dec. 15 announcement. Both appointments are effective Jan. 1 when the current cancer center director, Ian Thompson Jr., M.D., steps down.

The pair will lead cancer center efforts until a permanent director is appointed.

“This is a very exciting time for our cancer center,” Dr. Henrich said, “and I have confidence that Drs. Huang and Otto will provide superb leadership in each of our missions” of clinical care, research and education.

Dr. Huang currently serves as deputy director of the center as well as chair and professor of molecular medicine. He holds the Alice P. McDermott Distinguished University Chair.

Dr. Huang joined the Health Science Center in 2011 after serving as the director for the Center for Cancer Systems Biology at Ohio State University. He will work collaboratively with investigators in the domains of cancer research so that the resubmission of the 2019 Cancer Center Support Grant is successful.

Dr. Otto will head clinical efforts for the cancer center and will serve as the key liaison with UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in support of our recently announced affiliation, Dr. Henrich said.

Dr. Otto now serves as associate dean, Special Programs, in the School of Medicine as well as professor and chairman, Thomas Walthall Folbre, M.D., Endowed Chair in Otolaryngology. He is a practicing surgical oncologist (head and neck/skull base) and has chaired the otolaryngology/head and neck surgery department for 15 years. He formerly served as physician-in-chief of the cancer center from 2008 to 2009.
