About 700 Edgewood Independent School District second-graders received preventive care in February from dental students and student hygienists at UT Health San Antonio’s School of Dentistry. The free dental clinic was held in conjunction with the American Dental Association’s National Children’s Dental Health Month.

This is the 14th year the School of Dentistry has provided preventive oral health care for Edgewood ISD students.

In February 2016, 777 children were evaluated and 67 were referred to dentists in community health clinics for follow-up urgent care. The sealants provided in 2016 had a value of $70,533, based on $51 per sealant, and the total value of dental care exceeded $210,000. These services were provided to the Edgewood students at no cost.

Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas Inc. provided a grant for the sealants and other dental materials used in this year’s two dental clinics.
