Gang Huang, PhD, professor in the Department of Cell Systems and Anatomy and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine and holder of the Kathryn Mays Johnson Distinguished Chair in Oncology at UT Health San Antonio, has received a UT System Faculty Science and Technology and Retention (STARs) award of $1,013,488.
In 2004, The University of Texas System Board of Regents launched the STARs program to attract and retain the best-qualified faculty and to support and enhance UT System institutions across the state.
Dr. Huang was recruited by UT Health San Antonio in the fall of 2021. His research focuses on a wide scope of myeloid malignancies, including myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms and acute myeloid leukemia, as they share similar mutations, according to Dr. Huang. His research also studies a class of related epigenetic enzymes affecting tumor suppression and works to develop novel immune therapies for cancer.
“The STARs award will significantly promote my research and teaching work,” Dr. Huang said. “For example, this award will allow me to upgrade lab equipment and help me to recruit more pre-doctoral trainees and undergraduate students into my lab, enabling them to gain more perspectives in the fields of blood and leukemia.”
Dr. Huang also said that the award would support education programs in the Long School of Medicine and the Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson.
“Support of these programs will enhance the health science center’s competitiveness in the field of leukemia and cancer, benefiting research and patients in South Texas and beyond,” Dr. Huang said.
