WHAT: UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center is hosting the local meeting of the Biden Cancer Community Summit on Friday, Sept. 21.
San Antonio cancer leaders, health care providers, researchers, patients, family members, patient advocates, representatives from cancer-related organizations and the public are invited. The free event will be held Sept. 21.
The summit will include panel discussions with experts from UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center and the broader cancer community. Participants also will discuss how to provide support throughout a patient’s cancer journey. They also will have the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on improving the cancer journey with the Biden Cancer Initiative in Washington, D.C.
The summit is hosted nationally by former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden. In 2015, the Bidens lost their son, Beau, to brain cancer. Since then, they launched the nonprofit Biden Cancer Initiative as a national forum hosted in communities throughout the U.S. The aim is to seek a more cohesive, comprehensive and timely approach to prevent, diagnose, treat and promote healthy recovery from cancer.

Gail Tomlinson, M.D., Ph.D., professor and interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics and chief of the Pediatrics Division of Hematology/Oncology. She is a member of the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute.
Ramon Cancino, M.D., assistant professor/clinical and primary care physician at UT Health San Antonio.
Roberto Villarreal, M.D., senior vice president at University Health System.
Anna Taranova, executive research director at University Health System.
Ana Ramon, Texas Grassroots manager of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network.
Carlos Jaén, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.
