Faculty member authors book on careers outside academe for scientists

Teresa Evans, Ph.D., director of workforce and career development in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Health, is the co-author of a new book exploring career options for Ph.D. scientists hoping to find work outside academe.

ReSearch: A Career Guide for Scientists, published in May by Academic Press, is a career planning guide and practical tool for graduate students and postdocs. ReSearch includes chapters on the basics of career planning, determining unique selling points, and navigating work-life concerns.

The book was recently reviewed in Science Careers, a newsletter produced by Science magazine.

The reviewer said the authors “draw on their personal and professional experience helping Ph.D. students make career transitions to answer a large number of fine-grained questions—some of which probably wouldn’t occur to job seekers until late in the game.”

Dr. Evans is a graduate of UT Health San Antonio where she received her Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2014. She is a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacology.
