Prior to joining the faculty at the Health Science Center in 2000, Dr. Mills served as the chairman and program director of the U.S. Air Force Periodontics Residency. He also held appointments as the Chief Consultant in Periodontics to the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General and Special Consultant to the U.S. Air Force Assistant Surgeon General for Dental Services.

In addition to his roles as a former director and chair of the American Board of Periodontology (where he continues to serve as an examiner), Dr. Mills has authored or co-authored more than 30 scientific articles, abstracts, and textbook chapters. He is a member of the Texas Dental Association, Southwest Society of Periodontists, and the San Antonio District Dental Society.

“Dr. Mills’ true gift as an academician is how he relates to the student, instilling a drive to seek excellence both in the classroom and in the clinical setting,” said Air Force Col. Howard T. McDonnell (Ret.), former director of the Air Force’s Periodontics Residency Program. “Mike is, without a doubt, the best of the best.”
