Retired Maj. Gen. Byron C. Hepburn, M.D., director of the Health Science Center’s Military Health Institute, and a large contingent of Health Science Center faculty and staff, including Andrea Giuffrida, Ph.D., vice president for research, participated in the Military Health System Research Symposium, held Aug. 15-18 in Kissimmee, Florida.

The symposium is the only scientific meeting focused on the unique medical needs of the military at home and abroad. It is a scientific forum for military medical providers, Department of Defense scientists, academia and industry to exchange information on research advancements and health care developments in the areas of combat casualty care, military operational medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine and infectious disease research programs.

“The symposium was an outstanding opportunity for our Health Science Center faculty to highlight our research accomplishments,” Dr. Hepburn said. “It was also an excellent venue for professional networking, particularly for our junior faculty. I’m confident that networking will encourage future military research collaboration in the years ahead.”

HSC faculty members Alan Peterson, Ph.D., Donald H. Jenkins, M.D., Brian Eastridge, M.D., and Susannah Nicholson, M.D., all participated in panel presentations at the conference.

Also, Dr. Peterson, Dr. Nicholson, Roxana E. Delgado, Ph.D., and Jennifer Potter, Ph.D., presented posters. Dr. Potter also shared in another poster presentation with William Kazanis, M.S., Mary Jo Pugh, Ph.D., and Samantha Paniagua, B.A.

The Military Health Institute and the UT System also had an exhibit booth at the symposium.

Established at the Health Science Center in 2014, the Military Health Institute leads innovative medical research, health education and clinical care to enhance military collaborations with the goal of improving the health and well-being of military personnel, veterans and their families.
