Five faculty honored with 2017 Regents Outstanding Teaching Award
Five distinguished members of the faculty at UT Health San Antonio have been selected to receive the 2017 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award from The University of Texas System.
The 2017 winners from UT Health are:
- Constance Fry, M.D., associate professor, Department of Ophthalmology
- Kristy Y. Kosub, M.D., professor, Department of Medicine
- Brian L. Mealey, D.D.S., M.S., professor, periodontics, UT Dentistry
- Fred Richards, III, Ph.D., senior lecturer, Department of Cell Systems and Anatomy
- Pamela R. Wood, M.D., clinical professor, Department of Pediatrics
Since 2008, the regents’ awards (ROTA) have recognized faculty members who deliver the highest quality of instruction in the classroom, laboratory, field and online. This year’s 56 honorees from across UT System’s 14 academic and health institutions will be honored at an awards ceremony Aug. 23 in Austin.
The award is the foremost teaching honor in the UT System and recognizes excellence of the highest degree, William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president of UT Health, said in announcing the honorees.
“These are world-class educators here at our academic health center, serving our students, engaging and reinforcing them in their journeys to their future professions,” Dr. Henrich said. “They are indeed innovative and inspirational. This recognition by the Board of Regents is well deserved.”
Board of Regents chairman Paul L. Foster also praised the honorees.
“The Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards is one of the nation’s largest awards programs to honor exceptional instruction in the university classroom,” Foster said. “It is a reflection of the value the University of Texas System and the Board of Regents place on extraordinary teaching and student success, and it represents our profound appreciation to these wonderful educators and the life-changing impact they have on students at UT institutions.”
The Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards are among the largest monetary awards in the nation for rewarding outstanding faculty performance. Recipients receive a $25,000 award which will be distributed to the institution for disbursement directly to them or for use in their department or program.
The Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards recognizes tenured, tenure-track as well as other instructional faculty for their outstanding teaching, mentoring and personal commitment to students and the learning process.
Recipients are vetted by their peer colleagues, students and UT presidents before advancing to competition at the System level.
In their evaluations of a candidate’s teaching performance, members of the review panel consider a range of activities and criteria, including classroom expertise, curricula quality, innovative course development and student learning outcomes.
