Four new members were welcomed into the Academy of Master Teachers during an induction ceremony Nov. 17.

The academy, run by the UT Health San Antonio faculty, promotes and sustains excellence in health science education by building value and recognition in educational leadership and the scholarship of teaching. It was founded in 2008 under then-President Francisco Cigarroa with the induction of 79 charter members who had previously been awarded the Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence.

The academy now has more than 100 members.

The new inductees are:

  • Adelita G. Cantu, Ph.D., RN, associate professor, School of Nursing;
  • Andrew Muck, M.D., associate professor, Department of Emergency Medicine;
  • W. Francis Lam, Pharm.D., FCCP, professor, Department of Pharmacology;
  • Brent J. Shriver, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Physician Assistant Studies.

Also recognized at the ceremony was current member Daniel Lawrence Dent, M.D., for receiving the Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence.

“We are happy to welcome these distinguished faculty, said Catherine Ortega, Ed.D., president of the academy. “The executive committee for the academy looks to work with the Health Science Center administration to provide input toward faculty development for excellence in teaching as well as student assessment. Additionally, the academy endeavors to be a resource for faculty peer assessment as well as for the promotion of the scholarship of teaching.”
