France elected Councilor to national pharmacology society

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 23, 2012) — Charles P. France, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and psychiatry in the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, this year will assume duties as a Councilor to the American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics. His term begins July 1.

Dr. France, who holds a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in psychobiology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, is the principal investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants conducted at the UT Health Science Center. Three of these grants examine the behavioral pharmacology of drug dependence, the role of impulsivity in drug abuse, and dietary influences on drug abuse and dependence.

Dr. France is also principal investigator of a grant from NIH to train young investigators in drug abuse research. “Our primary interest is in drugs of abuse, and our goals are to understand the factors that contribute to escalated drug use (addiction) and to develop behavioral and pharmacological approaches for treating drug abuse and dependence,” he said.

The American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics offers publications, networking opportunities and other professional services to more than 4,500 members. The nine-member Council provides governance for the society.

Pharmacology is the science of drug action on biological systems. In its entirety, pharmacology embraces knowledge of the sources, chemical properties, biological effects and therapeutic uses of drugs.
