From the Chief Medical Officer: Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines now available

Dear faculty, staff, students and residents:

UT Health San Antonio offers COVID-19 Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine for children 5 to 11 years old. Convenient appointments can be scheduled for both children and adults at COVID-19 Vaccination Scheduling. A parent, legal guardian or authorized representative must accompany the child throughout the vaccine appointment at UT Health San Antonio.

This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) endorsed the recommendation that children 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine, which now expands vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States. Vaccines will become increasingly available at thousands of pediatric health care provider offices, pharmacies, Federally Qualified Health Centers and more.

Together, with science leading the charge, we have taken another important step forward in our community’s and our nation’s fight against the virus that causes COVID-19. We encourage parents with questions to talk to their pediatricians, school nurses or local pharmacists – or our pediatric specialists – to learn more about the vaccine and the importance of getting children vaccinated.

Respectfully,

Robert Leverence, MD
Chief Medical Officer, UT Health Physicians
