H-E-B on Nov. 9 presented UT Health San Antonio’s Cancer Therapy & Research Center with two checks, together totaling $100,000, for cancer treatment and research.

A check for $75,000 was presented to the CTRC for programs and cancer research. The funding was provided as a matching gift from customer participation in an H-E-B’s tear pad campaign supporting the work of the CTRC and the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Virginia Kaklamani, M.D., director of the CTRC Breast Cancer Program, was presented a check for $25,000 raised during Breast Cancer Awareness Month from the sales of a variety of beauty and general merchandise items in H-E-B stores.

“Too many of our customers, H-E-B Partners and communities have been affected by cancer,” said Julie Bedingfield from H-E-B public affairs. “That is why we are so honored to give back to an organization that shares our determination and passion for raising the level of awareness among our community and helping find a cure for cancer, once and for all.”

The funds will be an important resource for researchers working throughout the CTRC who have novel ideas on how to cure cancer but need preliminary funds to prove a concept before applying for larger grants.

In addition to the donations, breast cancer patients were treated to complimentary one-on-one styling sessions and special gifts from H-E-B’s Mia’s Mirror boutique.
