H-E-B on Aug. 19 announced a fundraising effort to benefit the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center—and H-E-B will make a matching donation from funds raised in San Antonio to benefit activities of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Center.

The campaign will include all H-E-B stores and Central Market stores in Texas and run through Sept. 13. Customers will be able to make $1, $3 or $5 donations at the register.

William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president of the Health Science Center, helped ceremonially paint through the word “cancer” on the side of an 18-wheeler bearing MD Anderson’s logo, “Making Cancer History.” He said the only way to defeat cancer will be through clinical trials and research.

Dr. Henrich praised H-E-B for the spirit of partnership that is a trademark among its employees and extends to the CTRC and throughout the community.

Brooke Brownlow, vice president of benefits, compensation and HR technology at H-E-B, mentioned the CTRC’s Kathryn Eggerss, RN, a nurse navigator with the H-E-B Partner Cancer Care Program. Eggerss is known as “the cancer angel” around H-E-B for helping its employees who have the disease.
