Head of Defense Health Agency visits UT Health San Antonio

Navy Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono, M.D., director of the Defense Health Agency in Washington, D.C., spoke to the Department of Surgery as well as military medical faculty and residents Sept. 17 about managing change and being a leader.

Dr. Bono, a trauma surgeon and San Antonio native, touched on the need for medical leaders to be responsive to the fast pace of change and dealing with complex organizations. She also reflected on the essential traits of leadership that are most helpful in managing change.

Dr. Bono has been director of the Defense Health Agency since 2015. She leads a joint Combat Support Agency enabling the armed forces to provide a medically ready force in both peacetime and during conflicts.

During her tenure, the Defense Health Agency has entered into a long-term educational partnership agreement with the UT System that will foster close collaboration between UT Health San Antonio and the Department of Defense.

Dr. Bono is the daughter of Anatolio B. Cruz Jr., M.D., a surgery faculty member of the School of Medicine since its founding in 1968.
