Muscle loss finding may one day save physiques

Why does sarcopenia happen and can it be stopped? A study conducted in mice with accelerated muscle loss at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio provides this insight: Less protection from antioxidants and more damage from oxidative stress results in impairment to cells’ energy centers, which slowly leads to death of muscle cells.





$5.2 million to fund studies of antibiotic’s effects on health span

Scientists at the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, a research facility of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, will begin testing the therapeutic qualities of rapamycin on age-related diseases and health span, thanks to a $5.2 million grant awarded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA).


Geriatrician to receive Tow Humanism in Medicine Award

Michael J. Lichtenstein, M.D., M.Sc., a geriatrician, teacher and scientist at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, will receive the 2009 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award for Faculty during the School of Medicine’s annual White Coat Ceremony on Sunday, July 26.
