Congenital heart surgery, heart and lung transplants, and coronary bypass surgery — these are some of the most complex surgical procedures performed in operating rooms across the country. Physicians in the division of cardiothoracic surgery at the Health Science Center have performed these lifesaving procedures on patients in San Antonio for more than 35 years. “We improve our methods and techniques every day,” said John Calhoon, M.D., head of the division of cardiothoracic surgery. “Our knowledgeable and skilled faculty members work as a team, and that’s what makes us successful. We have added another outstanding leader to our faculty who will help move us to the next level of practice, teaching and patient care.”

Seenu Reddy, M.D., has been recruited to serve as director of emerging technology, director of thoracic aortic surgery and as an assistant professor in the division of cardiothoracic surgery at the Health Science Center. He begins his duties on Jan. 1, 2006.

“Dr. Reddy comes to us with more than 150 endovascular procedures as the operating surgeon or assistant,” Dr. Calhoon said.

Prior to joining the Health Science Center, Dr. Reddy served as a special fellow in the division of vascular surgery at Emory University in Atlanta where he gained extensive experience in endovascular surgical techniques, particularly in the treatment of thoracic aortic disease.

“His experiences at Emory University will bring tremendous depth and knowledge to our team, and his interpersonal and leadership skills are already well known on a national level,” Dr. Calhoon said. “It speaks highly of our Health Science Center to recruit someone with his level of talent and expertise.”

Dr. Reddy also was recently named to a national post as chair of the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). He will hold a two-year term as chair and will serve on the ACGME Board of Directors. The ACGME is responsible for the accreditation of post-medical degree training programs within the United States. Accreditation is accomplished through a peer-review process and is based upon established standards and guidelines.

Dr. Reddy earned his medical degree with honors from The University of Alabama and completed a residency in general surgery and a research fellowship in cardiac surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He completed cardiothoracic training at Emory University. Dr. Reddy is board certified in surgery. His clinical interests include aortic surgery, endovascular and minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and congenital heart surgery.
