The UT Health San Antonio Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery has earned a distinguished three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for its patient care and lung and esophageal cancer resection outcomes. The three-star rating denotes the highest category of quality and places the department among the elite for general thoracic surgery.

The newer procedure is called robotic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, or robotic RPLND. Although the procedure has been previously reported, Mays Cancer Center developed technical improvements to make it safer, more effective and applicable in new indications.
