Honoring our veterans

Veterans Day is a day in which we honor the men and women who served in our nation’s armed forces. I respectfully ask each of you to reflect on the sacrifices made by our military service members that are required to protect our inalienable rights.

Veterans represent a legacy of service and dedication that has endured over the last 245 years. From the blistering cold at the Chosin Reservoir, the jungle warfare in Vietnam, and the urban combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, our nation’s heroes have overcome great adversity, especially when faced with overwhelming odds. Veterans come from across the country, from different cultures and walks of life, to serve something greater than themselves. This patriotic act preserves our country’s greatest asset: freedom.

UT Health San Antonio has a distinguished history of service in the armed forces. We have a significant number of faculty, staff and students who have served our nation in the past and those who are currently committed to service. Our own Military Health Institute was established in 2014, dedicated to improving the health and resiliency of our nation’s armed forces, veterans and their families through advances in research, education and health care. This year, we will pay a special tribute to our distinguished professor of surgery, Anatolio Cruz Jr., MD, retired Navy Captain. Watch tribute.

I want to personally thank our veterans and their families for the sacrifices they have made. I am truly grateful, as I’m sure others are as well, for your service in the military. I am proud of your continued service here at UT Health San Antonio. Today and every day, we honor and thank you.

Sincerely,

William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP
President
Professor of Medicine
