NOTES: Established in 1999, Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute is the largest pediatric cancer research facility in Texas. It is only one of two institutes in the United States dedicated solely to pediatric cancer research.
Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute’s 20 laboratories focus their strengths on cancer genomics, DNA repair, RNA biology and drug development in finding more effective and less toxic treatments for childhood cancers.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to increasing awareness of pediatric cancer and raising funds for research. Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 14. About 15,000 children and adults younger than 20 years old are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States.
The event is held in conjunction with the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio.
