Dear UT Health San Antonio community:

I am pleased to announce that Michael Schnabel, MBA, has been appointed the new vice president and chief information officer for UT Health San Antonio effective Nov. 1.

Michael joined UT Health San Antonio in 2013 and has served as the chief information security officer and assistant vice president of information security and operations for more than a decade. In that time, he has advanced UT Health San Antonio’s cybersecurity and network infrastructure to modernize our IT operations and support our transformational growth. He has a proven record of executing critical information security, cyber operations and data governance programs across academic, research and patient care domains. Michael is a strategic leader, routinely interacting with executive leadership, faculty, staff and students as well as our UT System administration and systemwide colleagues on important initiatives.

He has served as interim vice president and chief information officer since July 2024. Prior to joining UT Health San Antonio, Michael served as information security officer for City of Hope National Medical Center, where he transformed cybersecurity operations and information security assurance supporting City of Hope’s medical center, Beckman Research Institute, graduate school and philanthropy entities. Prior to his time at City of Hope, he worked in the financial sector, serving as senior vice president and chief information officer at Gateway Business Bank. He holds an MBA in Information Technology Management and a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from Western Governors University.

Michael has been a trusted and reliable partner across our research, academic and health care missions and is well regarded among his UT System peers and colleagues. With his vast experience, he is uniquely suited to lead our information technology services and operations into the future. I am confident that his expertise, his demonstrated leadership and his commitment to UT Health San Antonio will continue to advance our information technology capabilities through this time of phenomenal growth and change. The information technology team is strong and capable and under Michael’s leadership will ensure reliability and consistency while advancing multiple IT initiatives across our complex enterprise.

Please join me in congratulating Michael and extending your support to him as he takes on this important role for our organization.

Sincerely,

Andrea Marks
Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
