The 2023 annual report of the Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, highlights the accomplishments of the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center serving the South Texas region.
Among the stories shared:
- The work of researchers collaborating across disciplines to battle brain cancer, breast cancer and every kind of cancer in between.
- A teenager working to eradicate cancer after his grandfather died from the disease.
- The special bond between two friends and the lengths to which one will go to ensure a cancer-free life for the other.
Woven within these and other stories are common threads of hope, courage, truth and determination to approach the puzzle of cancer on all fronts, with investigators translating their research into life-saving cancer care for all South Texans while addressing social determinants of health and testing whether existing medications for conditions unrelated to cancer might contribute to successful outcomes for cancer patients.
Even as the Mays Cancer Center seeks expansion of its clinical trial capacity to help more patients overcome the disease, care teams, researchers, physicians, and patients and their families are together finding the power from within and harnessing their collective energy to persevere in their journey to end cancer.
