Molecular medicine associate professor receives UT System Rising STARs award

Lingtao Jin, PhD

Lingtao Jin, PhD from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), has received a UT System Rising STARs award in the amount of $250,000 to support his research into molecular-targeted therapies to treat human cancers.  Jin is an associate professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.

The funds will be used to purchase the advanced research equipment necessary for drug development endeavors.

“The UT System Rising STARs award is critical for our translational studies focusing on developing novel targeted therapies for cancer,” Jin said.  “The award will not only provide critical financial support for our research but also jumpstart my research program at UT Health San Antonio to help elevate and take our research to the next level.”

Dr. Jin’s research is focused on understanding the signaling of cancer metabolism, particularly how cell metabolism is reprogrammed to promote anti-cancer therapy resistance.  Jin shared, “I hope, through our cutting-edge research, we can not only make progress in our understanding of cancer but also help train the next generation of innovative cancer researchers at UT Health San Antonio.”

In 2004, the UT System Board of Regents created the UT System STARs awards program to attract and retain promising faculty members within The University of Texas System.  The $250,000 grant is awarded to early-career investigators.
