Moms, babies and drug addiction: The road to Casa Mia

Lisa Cleveland, Ph.D., RN, remembers her first encounter with new mothers who struggle with drug addiction and their babies born with drug withdrawal symptoms. She found they were not the selfish, uncaring women they are often portrayed to be, but “moms like me who love their children just like me.”

She has since spearheaded the founding of Casa Mia, an intensive residential drug rehabilitation programs that allows children to live with the mother.

The annual President’s Luncheon was held March 5 at the Pearl Stable. President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, invited four exceptional faculty members to share a glimpse into the important work they accomplish each day. Attendees are community supporters of UT Health San Antonio.
