New chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez MD

Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, M.D., has been appointed chairwoman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by the Long School of Medicine, effective April 1.

Dr. Gutierrez is an academic physiatrist from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston, where she is the vice chair of quality, compliance and patient safety in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and program director of the brain injury medicine fellowship.

She is also the medical director of the brain injury and stroke program at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Her clinical expertise includes caring for patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke rehabilitation and interventional spasticity management.

Inspired by her upbringing in the Rio Grande Valley, she is dedicated to giving back to her community by mentoring students, trainees and young faculty from diverse backgrounds, and providing top-level clinical care for the underserved.

Dr. Gutierrez succeeds Nicolas E. Walsh, M.D., who served as chairman for three decades and will continue in an emeritus role and as a part-time clinician.
