New master’s program in speech language pathology receives accreditation

The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program received an Award of Candidacy from the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for a period of five years beginning July 1.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this new master’s degree program in speech-language pathology,” said Dean of the School of Health Professions David C. Shelledy, Ph.D., RRT, FAARC, FASAHP. “Our program will be unique in Texas in that we will have a medical focus designed to prepare speech-language pathologists to work in a variety of settings including hospitals, other acute care facilities and rehabilitation centers.”

The program is two years, or five semesters, of graduate study grounded in a unique curricular specification and community-based clinical training with a medical focus.

The University of Texas System Office of Health Affairs and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) approved the MS-SLP program in 2016, and the ASHA-CAA completed an on-site candidacy review on May 18.

“We look forward to starting a unique program in medical speech-language pathology here in San Antonio,” said Fang-Ling Lu, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, associate professor and director of the speech-language pathology program. “Training SLP students in a health science campus at UT Health San Antonio is a perfect educational model to offer graduates a robust scientific education and community-based clinical training for work as medical speech-language pathologists in diverse health care settings.”
