News 4: Local researchers find out why new and expecting moms are vulnerable to overdose

Breaking the cycle is the emphasis of a recent study published in the medical journal Addiction by Dr. Lisa Cleveland, School of Nursing. The study shows that new moms who relapse often had troubled childhoods.

“They had experienced events such as losing a loved one to violence, so whether that was suicide or an accident,” explains Dr. Cleveland. “And then multiple different forms of abuse – to include emotional, sexual and physical abuse.”
