Office of the President: Honoring our veterans

This Monday, we observe Veterans Day — a day dedicated to honoring those who have served or are currently serving in our nation’s armed forces. It is a day to reflect on the sacrifices they have made in defense of our freedoms and an opportunity for all of us to express our deepest gratitude for their service.

As “Military City, USA,” San Antonio holds a unique bond with veterans and active-duty service members. UT Health San Antonio is part of this proud tradition. Many of our faculty, staff, students and residents are veterans or actively serving, embodying the values that shape our institution: selflessness, bravery and duty.

Our university’s commitment to our current military, veterans and their families is exemplified by efforts such as leading the Trauma Research and Combat Casualty Care Collaborative (TRC4), a partnership with UT System, the Department of Defense and the Level 1 Trauma Center at University Hospital. This collaboration addresses a critical need for advanced trauma care across military and civilian sectors to significantly improve health outcomes and increase survival rates for trauma patients.

And our own Military Health Institute, established in 2014 and now under the leadership of retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert I. Miller, MD, embodies another cornerstone of our commitment. With a focus on advancing the health and resilience of service members, veterans and their families, the institute has earned national recognition as a leader in military-related research and clinical care. The Military Health Institute strengthens the bonds between service and science, enhancing both our institution and our community.

We invite you to join us for a special Veterans Day celebration at 9 a.m. Monday in the lobby of the Academic and Administration Building (AAB), where Joseph Alderete, MD, will be the featured speaker.

On this Veterans Day — and every day — we honor our veterans and express our heartfelt gratitude to all who serve as well as those who continue their commitment to service within the UT Health San Antonio family.

Sincerely,

Rob Hromas, MD, FACP
Acting President
